42000 reasons for hoping

42000 raisons d'espérer (French version)

How to twist the neck of
selfishness and apathy ?

How to graft Art and Solidarity
in the hope that the benefits will multiply ?

A challenge for the third millenary.

Inhabitants or friends of "Maurienne", citizens of France or of the world, all those who wish so can be represented by an "aura" of aluminium to which they can give a personal touch, by engraving on it their name, a message, a drawing, a poem...

42000 reasons for hoping

After the engraving of the 42000 auras, representing symbolically the 42000 inhabitants of the valley, before putting all the pieces together, each inscription will be embossed on paper, thus allowing everyone to have a keepsake of his own creation.

A huge aluminium sculpture, containing thousands of personal messages engraved by the people of Maurienne and their friends, will be erected in the form of an aura to form "Laura".

The inauguration of "Laura"
took place on September 21st 1997.

Solidarity

The chief aim of this project is to do something together, to be open to others (at a time when selfishness predominate), creating bonds of friendship, new relationships and bearing in mind, the involvement, above all, of those less-favoured ones among us.

An integrated workshop

To cope with this vast project, a workshop has been opened. It offers 10 jobs to those in straightened circumstances. This workshop is the centre of Solid'Art and through it, together, we will erect a meaning full, collective masterpiece.

By engraving his or her own piece, by helping financially, each one can contribute to the success of this workshop, supplementing its staff, thus participating in this humane adventure of Solid'Art Maurienne.

Art

Laura :

Created by Marc Bietry, sculptor from Lyon (France), Laura will represent, from a distance, a huge human head lined by a halo, or a key-hole, or a parabolic reflector for extra-terrestrials !!!
In close-up, it will reveal a multitude of artistic expressions each one distinct and yet harmonious.

Covering a total surface of 5000 square meters, "Laura" will be the one and only work in the world, in which each person will be integrated.

The engraving :

A very simple technique within everyone's reach. The pieces are protected by a layer of varnish. To obtain your drawing just trace on the varnish with a hard point (ball-point pen,...) and then send the piece to us. Our team will dip it into an acid bath which will penetrate the lines made on the varnish.

T

This longest alpine valley is 120 kms long and serves thoroughfare between France and Italy and Southern Europe. It was in Maurienne that the process of manufacturing aluminium was invented 100 years ago. Besides the aluminium industry, the "Maurienne" offers a pleasant and homely holiday attraction (24 summer and winter resorts) together with a high quality standard of agricultural products (cheese for example).
